But China should realize that some EU countries have

?become increasingly cautious about deepening cooperation with China because of its rapid developm

ent; in fact, a few EU countries have decided to implement tougher measures for foreign trade. The European Commission even put

forward a 10-point policy package on China on March 11, which the European Council discussed on March 21.

But the fact that the Commission sees China as a “cooperation partner”, “negotiating partner”, “eco

nomic competitor” as well as a “systemic rival” means it wants to build on the partnership of strategic cooperation with China.

The EU’s attempt to coordinate the concerns of its different members and its efforts to continue dialogue with China reflect coope

ration are not a subjective choice of one single EU country but an objective choice for the mutual interest of all the parties involved.

China has addressed many of the EU’s concerns to strengthen coop

eration, including further opening-up. And it should keep taking measures to strengt

hen cooperation and communication to settle the disputes with EU countries and meet the emerging challenges.

World’s widest immersed channel takes shape

The first tube of the world’s widest immersed channel is expected to be put in position of a mega bridge across the Lin

gding Bay at the mouth of the Pearl River in South China soon, according to an assistant chief engineer of the project.

Yang Runlai from CCCC First Harbor Engineering Co Ltd said Thursday that workers are preparing

for the connection of a tunnel end on an island with the first immersed tube, the Science and Technology Daily reported.

Yang’s company took charge of constructing an island and major part of the tunnel of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bri

dge, another mega project of bridge, island and tunnel after the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB).

The new project, 38 kilometers from the HZMB, is 24 kilometers long. It has the immer

sed tunnel in the east and the bridge section in the west to ensure the sea routes there.

With a length of 6.8 kilometers and a width of 46 meters

the two-way eight-lane tunnel will be the largest and widest in the worl

d upon completion. Its tunnel will be 1.2 meters longer and two lanes wider than the HZMB.

Yang said the immersed tunnel used the steel shell tube, the first of its kind in China, and there were many other new struct

ures and technologies, which brought lots of challenges, such as lack of technical standards in the country.

He said the tunnel will have 32 tubes and each tube will have about 10,000 tons of steel, 165 met

ers long and with a displacement of about 80,000 tons. Each tube has more than 2,500 separate chambers.

After tubes are built in factory, they are floated to th

e construction site, and the most difficult process is to sink and connect, Yan

g said. His company has invited experts to deliberate in rounds on the cement pouring, sealing and connection.

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge is another important infrastructure project of the country’s 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020).

The construction started on Dec 29, 2016. It is expected to put into operation in 2024.

Hainan’s hybrid seeds sprout along Belt, Road

Island province ‘will ensure’ that Boao Forum continues to promote cooperation

The international exchanges and cooperative efforts prompted

by the Boao Forum for Asia are turning Hainan province into the Silicon Valley of seeds for co

untries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative, according to a Hainan government official.

More hybrid rice seeds cultivated by Chinese scientists at the Nanfan Scientific and Rese

arch Breeding Base in Hainan are being introduced to ASEAN countries. The total combined area of hyb

rid rice cultivation in India, Vietnam, the Philippines, Pakistan and Indonesia – major rice-growing countries – has reac

hed 4.28 million hectares, said Wang Sheng, director of the Foreign Affairs Office of Hainan province.

Wang spoke at a news conference on March 19 before the Boao For

Considering that the aircraft faces uncertainties in its airwo

irworthiness, after looking into the matter, the administration decided to suspend Boe

ing 737 MAX 8 airworthiness certifications immediately,” the Civil Aviation Administration of China said in a sta

tement unveiled on Tuesday, adding that the ongoing investigation had not ruled out design flaws in the aircraft.

“A certificate is granted by the country’s regulator after an aircraft has been inspected and

meets the requirements for safe operation,” said Li Xiaojin, a professor of aviation economics at Civil Aviatio

n University in Tianjin, “It’s a long process to determine whether an aircraft is airworthy.”

It took Boeing 15 months to get an airworthiness certificate for the first 737 MAX 8 from the a

dministration, he said, adding that the certificate was issued in October 2017.

The administration has sent experts to participate in investigations and will rev

iew the model’s airworthiness with a focus on alterations to the jet engine design and pla

cement. It will resume accepting applications for the certificate after the aircraft design is found to meet the requirements.

hina urges UK to stop interfering in Hong Kong’s affairs

China on Thursday urged the United Kingdom to respect China’s sovereignty and stop interfering in Hong Kong’s affairs.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang made the remarks after the UK government released its latest six-monthly report on Hong Kong.

“We urge the UK to face the reality that Hong Kong has returned to China for 22 years, respect China’s s

overeignty, stop releasing relevant reports, and stop interfering in Hong Kong’s affairs,” Geng said at a press briefing.

It is undeniable that the “one country, two systems” practice has achieved widely-acknowledged success, he said.

“Hong Kong’s affairs have been entirely China’s internal affairs since

July 1, 1997. The British side has no right to make irresponsible remarks or interfere with any excuses,” Geng said.

Liu, the spokesman, said the ministry dispatched a team co

nsisting of 49 experts from institutes affiliated with the ministry and universities

, including Tsinghua University, to the site to help with the environmental aftermath from the explosion.

He also said the team has cut off the access of three rivers to Guanhe River, which empties into the sea, to prevent the pollution from spreading.

The three rivers inside the chemical industry park wer

e found contaminated soon after the blast. On Wednesday, an excessive amount of pollutants was still de

tected in two water bodies in the chemical park — the Xinfeng River and Xinnong River.

According to the Jiangsu environmental watchdog, the density of ammonia nitrogen in Xinfeng River reached 183 millig

rams per liter, 90.5 times higher than the national standard, at 10 am on Wednesday. The content of methylene chlor

ide in the river was about 15 times above the national standard with a density of 0.321 mg/L. The ch

emical oxygen demand in the water body stood at 343 mg/L, 7.6 times above the national standard, the watchdog said.

The watchdog also found an excessive amount of these pollutants in Xinnong River, though with much lower densities.

Cities emerging into new post-Brexit financial centers

The United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union has led major

financial companies in London to move assets and staff to continental Europe, mea

ning the post-Brexit landscape is likely to be far more “polycentric” than it is today

and far less centered on one location.

According to a recent report by think tank The New Financial, more than 40 companies have shifted staff or oper

ations to more than one financial center within the EU, with 100 choosing the

Irish capital as a post-Brexit location, whi

ch was the most popular choice ahead of Luxembourg, with 60, Paris with 41, Frankfurt with 40, and Amsterdam with 32.

William Wright, principal author of the

New Financial Brexitometer report, said: “One of the most strikin

g findings of our analysis is the extent to which Europe will become a much more

‘multipolar’ world as a result of Brexit.”

Companies are migrating to, or expanding in, multiple financial centers, with man

y either establishing a dedicated division for EU business or spreading their staff

more evenly throughout the EU.

The roads were sandy and muddy in the past, causing him t

m to stumble on the roads. “One year, it was snowing, and I walked more than one hour to the s

chool. My colleague helped me half of the way — otherwise, I might have fallen into the gully,” he said.

Gao Yangyao, who worked with Gao Ziren for many years, said that “he has difficulty walking, but he is usually the first to come to school.”

Gao Ziren’s Mandarin Chinese was not so good in the beginning, and he continued listening to radio broadcasts to improve his pro

nunciation. When students had the wrong pronunciation, he would correct them, even when it cost the whole class time.

In 1980s, the mountainous area had poor teaching conditions, with a lack of desks and benches, so Gao br

ought some desks and benches from home. When some impoverished students had no stationery, he would buy it for them.

Gao Xiaomei, one of the first students Gao Ziren taught and now a school principal in Meiling, said that he taught child

ren carefully and usually walked close to students to help them solve problems. His carefulness led her to be a teacher.

n a rainy day, Gao Ziren accompanied the girl home and

comforted her when she was frightened by thunder. Gao has also used his mobile phone to help the girl talk with her parents. Gradually, her performance improved.

“I have taught many students since being a teacher for so many years. Some students wo

uld like to visit during the holidays, and it feels good that someone remembers you,” Gao Ziren said.

“When rural children lack family education, schools and teachers need to do more in psych

ological education,” said Li Wu, a principal of Meiling Central School. He said rural areas need more teachers like Gao Ziren.
